Scientists proposed a model in which the mysterious force (dark energy) possesses something like inertia: it needs time to respond, like a heavy pendulum. Because of this, the expansion of the Universe doesn’t accelerate forever, but instead decays, like a pendulum in thick honey. The brake that slows it down is chaos — entropy at the edges of the observable cosmos (an idea close to the work of Jacob Bekenstein).

Eventually, the expansion comes to a complete stop. The stage of existence itself — spacetime — becomes perfectly flat and empty, like a smooth table. A check against galaxy recession data showed an excellent match with the model, even better than standard theories. An unexpected twist: the model predicts that in the early Universe, the expansion rate might have quivered faintly — like ripples on a surface. These tremors aren’t visible yet, but future telescopes might catch them.
