Abstract

Imagine a universe that contracts but, instead of collapsing into a point, bounces back like a rubber ball. New research shows that this behavior naturally arises if space is filled with a special 'fluid' — phantom Chaplygin gas. In this process, time for the matter we are familiar with momentarily reverses, but the gas itself 'doesn't notice' this. Could it be that our Universe also experienced such a bounce?

For a long time, scientists struggled to bypass the starting point — the infinitely dense seed of the Big Bang, where Einstein's equations lose all meaning. A solution emerged in the form of Chaplygin gas — an exotic medium that mimics dark energy and works like a tightly stretched trampoline.

As the universe contracts to its limit, it plunges into this gas, which buckles and then flings everything back into expansion. At the moment of pushback, our clocks tracking cosmic age reverse: for matter, time turns backward. From the outside, this looks like a moment of stillness before a bounce, but inside hides an entire era of backward flow. The universe doesn't crash — it springs back elastically.

The most stunning part: the bounce works even when sound waves in the gas outrun light. Intuition rebels, but the math stays calm. Adding any other forms of matter doesn't spoil it — the mechanism is remarkably robust.
