The Crystal That Remembers
A calcium tungstate (CaWO₄) crystal is like a musical instrument: its atoms vibrate like strings, and these vibrations can 'drown out' fragile quantum information. To understand exactly how this happens, scientists bombarded the crystal with neutrons and recorded the response — producing a map of all possible vibrations, from low notes to very high ones.

Sound Magnet: How Atoms Twist Sound into a Spiral
In a solid, atoms vibrate, transmitting sound. Sometimes this wave doesn't run straight but curls into a spiral, like a corkscrew entering a cork. In ordinary crystals, such 'sound vortices' are known, but in magnetic materials they had long eluded detection.

Disorder That Gives Birth to Order
In an ordinary crystal, atoms stand in neat rows like soldiers on a parade ground. Any deviation from this formation is usually considered harmful: disorder scatters waves and quickly dampens collective motions of particles.
