The Phase Transition Nobody Noticed
The nickelate family consists of layered crystals, like a stack of pancakes: nickel and oxygen layers alternate with lanthanum spacers. Two years ago, superconductivity was discovered in them — the ability to conduct electricity without resistance when cooled.

Magnetic Light in a Crystal
The crystal Mn₂Mo₃O₈ resembles a tiny city where manganese atoms are arranged in strict order: their magnetic moments (tiny internal arrows) point alternately up and down. This state is called collinear altermagnetism.
