An Electron Flashing in the Air
In a dark room, you might notice a faint blue glow around some radiation sources. This is Cherenkov light: it appears when a charged particle travels through a medium faster than light can propagate in it. The result is a light shock wave, similar to the sonic boom from a supersonic jet, but made of photons.
Negative ions flow at ordinary pressure
Deep in a cave beneath the Italian Apennines, a tank of gas sits in the dark. Inside, charged particles fly through, leaving faint flashes of light in their wake. These flashes are like the wake of a boat on dark water: they reveal where the particle went and how fast.
