Abstract

On the outskirts of the solar system, a multitude of planet-sized objects could be hiding. Sometimes they swing close to Earth, stirring up gigantic waves and eruptions—as if a celestial body rushed past. Perhaps it’s these encounters that explain the mass extinctions of the past. Picture an ocean heaved upward by a passing 'cosmic mountain'?

On the outskirts of the Solar System, thousands of objects the size of a planet lurk. Sometimes their paths cross Earth's orbit. A collision isn't necessary—even a close flyby of such a behemoth can trigger a catastrophe.

As Isaac Newton showed, the pull of a massive body acts like shaking a bowl of soup. When a visiting planet zooms past, it forcefully tugs on oceans—waves skyrocket, the Earth's crust cracks, and volcanoes spew lava. On top of that, the gravitational gust rips off part of Earth's atmosphere like wind snatching a hat.

Such events left traces in the rocks: layers of ash and washed-away animals across the globe. The demise of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago might have been caused not only by an asteroid but also by a passing planet. And the Sun itself, over its long life, has snagged such wanderers, briefly intensifying its heat—Earth alternately froze and roasted.
