Abstract

Astrobiology often overlooks the origin and evolution of intelligence. Enter noosemiotics—the study of noosignatures: structured traces left by conscious activity on any medium, whether physical (tools, engravings, architecture) or signal-based (coded transmissions, complex animal communication). Noosignatures sit between biosignatures (marks of life) and technosignatures (marks of technology), identified as products of intelligence regardless of whether we can extract meaning. The proposal includes an empirical metrics research program, using material culture as the main proving ground to refine detection methods.

Studying distant exoplanets, scientists look for signs of life — for instance, water and carbon — and signs of technology: radio signals, megastructures. But between these clues there is a yawning gap. If intelligence hasn't created machines or they've vanished, we won't notice it. A new approach suggests searching for noosignatures — any ordered imprints of a thinking being.

A paw print in clay: not life itself and not a wheel, but it's clear — someone thinking was here. So too noosignatures — from a pattern of pebbles to a signal that means nothing to us.

Noosemiotics, the science of such traces, gives clear criteria to distinguish them from natural chaos. Its first examples are terrestrial: stone tools, cave paintings. Applying these methods to spectroscopy of distant planets' atmospheres, we may notice what we previously missed. The most surprising twist: the most reliable noosignatures are not messages, but waste. A rubbish heap is visible from distant stars and needs no decoding.
