The possibility of natural and directed panspermia via interstellar objects was investigated using 3I/ATLAS as a case study. Data from SPHEREx (CO₂, H₂O, CO, dust, C–H band) and JWST/MIRI (first direct detection of CH₄ in an interstellar object, unusual CO₂:H₂O and CH₄:H₂O ratios) were analyzed, distinguishing between passive flight and active perihelion stages. Natural panspermia is plausible: microbes can survive in icy films with low metabolic activity; yet to account for the detected methane signals via frozen biomass, a staggering ~10¹⁴–10¹⁵ kg would be needed, while active methanogenic archaea in warm liquid water could slash that number by orders of magnitude. Directed panspermia is unfeasible: an impact at 60 km/s releases 1.8×10⁹ J/kg, destroying any biological capsule. Such objects should be viewed as test cases for diagnosing panspermia, not as evidence of life.
