Abstract

Most proposed technosignatures rely on detecting deviations from natural signals — essentially, searching for pollution. Following the work of indigenous scholars, pollution is considered a form of colonization, even on an interstellar scale. Thus, current searches aim to detect colonial societies that mirror Earth's own, which may shed light on the Fermi paradox: we scan for highly polluting and potentially destructive systems, while civilizations with minimal environmental impact are overlooked. As an alternative, the concept of technosignatures that sustain natural ecosystems is proposed — technologies reflecting harmonious relationships with nature, functionally converging with biosignatures.

We've been scanning the skies for factory smoke, but what if intelligent civilizations are growing gardens? Astronomers usually look for technosignatures — chemical pollution in the atmospheres of exoplanets. This method is like tracking down colonizers who leave a trail of soot. However, perhaps truly advanced societies don't destroy their home but take care of it. Their technologies are invisible to our instruments — they don't belch smoke; on the contrary, they clean the air and restore ecosystems.

A civilization living in harmony with nature leaves no dirty traces—only lush greenery.

How can we detect such harmony? Spectral analysis—studying atmospheric composition through starlight—could reveal anomalously clean air or signs of technologies that actively green the planet. This is no longer a search for destruction, but a search for creation. Ironically, pollution itself might not come from technology: Earth's volcanoes spew more sulfur each year than our entire industry.

Perhaps we've been listening on the wrong frequency: wise civilizations stay silent because they don't pollute.

🎯 The Fermi paradox (the silence of the Universe) might be explained by the fact that we were looking for smoke instead of a fresh breeze.
