In the darkness of interstellar space drift millions of rogue planets — worlds not bound to any star. They are almost impossible to see, but when such a wanderer passes in front of a distant star, its gravity bends the light and momentarily creates a cosmic magnifying glass.

A match flares from both ends. First the head ignites, and a moment later the flame engulfs the wooden stick. Something similar may happen in some Type Ia supernovae — except the match is a white dwarf (a star the size of Earth), and the flame is a thermonuclear explosion.

In the dense galaxy cluster Abell 2744, where gravity bends light like a lens, the James Webb Space Telescope spotted a new point of light. It appeared in images from 2023 and then began to change brightness. It was a supernova, the explosion of a dying star, but not just any kind: a Type IIP.
