Rainer K. Sachs was born on 13 June 1932 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He emigrated to the USA, where he earned his doctorate at Syracuse University. He worked at the University of California, Berkeley, and at other research institutions. Together with Arthur M. Wolfe in 1967, he predicted the effect linking the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background to gravitational potentials. His research covered general relativity, cosmology, and mathematical physics. He passed away on 16 January 2024.
