Light in a Crystal Twists Itself
Light passing through a thin crystal can change color and the direction of its oscillations. In a molybdenum disulfide flake just hundreds of atoms thick, an infrared beam turns green, and its polarization, the way the light wave oscillates, obeys the crystal's geometry.

How to Find Your Way with Clip-On Antennas
At the heart of the system is a rail with clip-on antennas moving along it, each emitting a radio signal. The smartphone receives these and, knowing the speed of light, calculates the distance to each antenna from the time delay.

Clamp antennas: when obstacles speed up the signal
A clamp antenna system resembles a garden hose with punctures. In the waveguide cable, emission points are created where radio waves burst out, like water from a hole. Obstacles in the path block direct communication, but reflected signals can bypass the barrier.
The Underground Guardian of Purity
A huge pool of clear liquid is hidden deep underground. Inside, there is nothing but a pristine 'broth' that flashes with faint light when an invisible particle flies through. This is the JUNO detector—20,000 tons of liquid scintillator built to hunt for neutrinos. The main enemy of such a hunt is not darkness but its own noise.
