Planet WASP-121b orbits so near its star that the fierce heat boils its atmosphere away, streaming like a comet's tails. With the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers continuously watched this process for the first time.

Seven hours: that's how long a year lasts on TOI-4552b. It whips around its star faster than some moons orbit Earth. The star is a dim red dwarf, four times smaller than the Sun, but the planet is so close that it receives hundreds of times more heat than we do.

A quarter-century ago, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz discovered the first hot Jupiter, and shattered all the rules of planet formation. A gas giant on a days-long orbit couldn't have formed next to the star: it's far too hot and lacks building material. So, it must have been born far away and then migrated.
