To spot life on other planets, you don't necessarily need to search for oxygen in the air. Living beings paint the surfaces of their worlds: Earth's plants in green, bacteria in purple. The future HWO space telescope will capture these "paints of life" on exoplanets. Like an artist, it will break down the planet's light into dozens of shades using color analysis, hunting for characteristic color signatures. Particularly vivid traces are expected where there is liquid water and carbon compounds.

The main challenge is the weak signal. The telescope will need 20–40 times more useful light than noise, and a wide color range—from visible to thermal radiation. Only then can you avoid confusing the hues of the living with lifeless minerals. Back in the last century, astronomer Nancy Grace Roman dreamed of instruments that could distinguish the color of distant worlds. Today, her dream is an engineering challenge.

If the method works, we will for the first time confidently declare that there is life on a distant point in space. Perhaps its palette won't be green at all: purple bacteria reigned on the young Earth, and such purple life might turn out to be the rule, not the exception.
