A Beacon Near Our Nearest Sun: First Glimpse of a Planet around Alpha Centauri A
In August 2024, the MIRI coronagraph on the James Webb Space Telescope stared at Alpha Centauri A, the nearest Sun-like star to our Sun. At 1.5 arcseconds from the star, a point source, S1, blinked into view. Flux: 3.5 mJy, contrast: 5.5×10⁻⁵. Four to six sigma. A lighthouse flashing in the fog.

Cosmic Disks Flicker Like Candles
Around young stars, flat clouds of gas and dust swirl — the building material for future planets. Starlight reflects off these clouds, and astronomers see them as faint disks. But sometimes bright spots or dark bands appear in such disks. Fresh observations with the Subaru Telescope show these patterns can change within a matter of months.
Space Fireflies: Hunting for the Laser Pulse of Extraterrestrial Civilizations
In the silent ocean of the Galaxy, mature civilizations have likely long chosen an unexpected strategy: instead of loud beacons, they scatter quiet fireflies — autonomous interstellar laser beacons, drifting in the void and dropping microsecond flashes. These 'seeds of contact' are not tied to their home stars and do not drown in their glow.
