Squeezing Light Out of a Crystal to Its Limit
When you pluck a guitar string hard, it doesn't sound a single note but several at once — the fundamental tone and overtones. Physicists have pulled a similar trick with light: they aimed an infrared laser at a crystal, and the crystal lit up with sixteen colors at once, from invisible heat to hard ultraviolet.

Ultrasound Keeps an Eye on the Spine
Your back hurts, and the doctor asks you to bend forward and backward to see how your vertebrae move. Usually, this means a series of X-rays: they show motion, but only in a plane, like a shadow on a wall. And volumetric methods like CT scans can't keep up with movement. Engineers proposed a different approach: a robot sweeps an ultrasound probe over your back while you bend.
When a Material Bends Only One Way
Bending a sheet of paper is easy. But compressing it by pushing from the edge is a different story: the paper will crumple but barely transmit the force further. That's how ordinary elasticity works — deformation depends on where and how you press. The new three-dimensional lattice pushes this contrast to the limit.

Blinking Crystals: How Thousands of Ions Flicker as One
An ordinary light bulb is either on or off. But tiny glowing particles, nanocrystals with rare-earth ions, have so far emitted steady light, like small flashlights. Inside such a crystal, there are thousands of emitting ions, and even if one 'gets tired,' the others keep shining. Therefore, blinking, sharp on-and-off switching, was considered impossible for them.
