Carl Friedrich Gauss

Carl Friedrich Gauss is one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He made decisive contributions to number theory, algebra, statistics, geometry and astronomy. Gauss's theorem (the divergence theorem) relates the flux of a vector field through a closed surface to the volume integral of the divergence and is key in electromagnetism and gravitation. His work on the curvature of surfaces anticipated non-Euclidean geometry.

Biography

Born in Brunswick, studied at the University of Göttingen. Received his doctorate from the University of Helmstedt. Worked as director of the Göttingen Observatory and professor of astronomy. Collaborated with Wilhelm Weber, with whom he built the first electromagnetic telegraph. Member of many academies, winner of the Copley Medal.

Key discoveries

💡 Gauss himself requested that a regular 17-gon be engraved on his tombstone, the construction of which he found at the age of 19, but the stonemason refused, saying it would be indistinguishable from a circle.
