Born in 1936 in Omaha, Nebraska. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his PhD in experimental physics in 1962. He spent most of his career at the California Institute of Technology, working on elementary particle physics (neutrino experiments). In 1994, he became director of LIGO and transformed the project, leading it to successful detection in 2015. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017.
