Marie Curie

French physicist and chemist of Polish origin, pioneer in the study of radioactivity. She discovered the elements polonium and radium, developed methods for isolating radioactive isotopes. Twice winner of the Nobel Prize: in Physics (1903) and in Chemistry (1911). Her work laid the foundations of nuclear physics and medical radiology.

Biography

Born in Warsaw (then Russian Empire) as Maria Skłodowska. Studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. Married Pierre Curie, with whom she worked. After his death, she headed the laboratory, became the first female professor at the Sorbonne. She founded the Radium Institute in Paris.

Key discoveries
