Felix Bloch

1905–1983 · Quantum mechanics, Solid-state physics, Nuclear magnetic resonance
Swiss-American physicist, Nobel laureate. He created the theory of energy bands in solids (Bloch waves), and developed the Bloch equations for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). His name is borne by the Bloch sphere — a geometric representation of a qubit state, which has become a fundamental tool in quantum computing and information.

Biography

He studied physics at the Zurich Polytechnic and at the University of Leipzig under Werner Heisenberg. He worked at Stanford University, where he founded the school of solid-state physics. During the war, he participated in the Manhattan Project. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1952) for the development of nuclear magnetic resonance methods. He was the first Director-General of CERN (1954–1955).

Key discoveries

💡 The Bloch sphere was first introduced in 1946 to describe spin dynamics, but became an icon of quantum computing only half a century later. Bloch also enjoyed music and played the piano.
